The course was designed consulting contemporary discourse of graphic design, which means that in addition to the visual and practical design form it explores its capabilities in the context. Therefore, the ultimate goal of the course is for the student to be able to implement the accumulated knowledge from various disciplines, and with the use of symbols and appropriate content, and placing them in their proper context, provide affordable and effective communication to the addressee, that is, the end user.
It is of great importance to the education program of graphic designers to include relevant aspects from different disciplines, as an element of context in the contemporary understanding of graphic design, such as: semiotics, sociology, politics, mostly applied psychology. Concerning the developing ties between the graphic design and broader context of the humanities-social sciences, students have the opportunity to experience the real potential of this field.
The Graphic Design Course contains the theoretical and practical part. The lectures within the theoretical part of the course include the following thematic units: The culture of design – design process and production, The concept and subject of graphic design – the contemporary discourse, Propaganda - methods and techniques of propaganda, Messages in the marketing communication system – advertising, The choice of an effective propaganda theme, Instincts and appeals in advertising, Registers and levels in graphic communication messages – the verbal register, Registers and levels in graphic communication messages – the visual register, Social semiotics: representative meaning, interactive meaning, compositional meaning, Graphic design – the emergence of a new profession: art prints, arts and crafts, art nuvo–jugendstil–secession, modern art poster, informative functionalism, Graphic design of socio–artistic avant–garde and modernism: futurism, dada, constructivism, de stijl, bauhaus, international style, Magazine and editorial design, Modernism in magazine design – art direction, Typographic subcultural styles: pop style, psychedelia, punk, The graphic design of resistance and activism: Polish poster school, Grapus, Postmodernism in graphic design, Modern styles of graphic design: zombie modernism, modernism 2.0, multi style. Within the practical part of the subject, through exercises and project assignments, the following thematic units are covered: Visual identity of a propaganda action, Design and layout of magazines.
The theoretical part of the course is presented through slide presentations supplemented with the abundance of visual and audio examples. Within computer-based exercises, students take in the visual material through displayed presentations and are taught how to navigate the interface of computer applications for vector graphics, image editing and layout design. Students' assignments are realized through regular consultations with the professor and teaching assistant.
