Course specification

Course is active from 01.10.2005..

-Develop knowledge in the field of environmental monitoring. -Introducing the student to the requirements, implementation and application of national and EU legislation in the field of environmental protection. -Introducing the student to the responsibilities of legislative institutions, accredited laboratories and individuals in the process of planning and implementation of environmental monitoring. -Acquiring knowledge for planning and conducting monitoring of air, waste gases, surface water, groundwater and wastewater. -Acquiring knowledge in the field of sampling and laboratory analysis of air, waste gases, surface water, groundwater and wastewater. -Acquiring knowledge for recognizing the validity and significance of laboratory test results. -Acquiring knowledge for evaluating compliance with legal requirements and interpreting the results of monitoring of air, waste gases, surface water, groundwater and wastewater. -Familiarize students with projects.
After completing the course and passed the exam, students will be able to: - Recognize and interpret the requirements of national and EU regulations; -Identify the relevant legal regulations related to the field of environmental protection; -Identify appropriate methods for sampling and laboratory analysis of air and waste gases; - Identify and apply appropriate methods for sampling and laboratory analysis of surface water, groundwater and wastewater; -Plan and design monitoring of selected environmental media (air, waste gas, surface water, groundwater and wastewater).
Lectures: Environmental monitoring - basic principles. National and EU regulations in the area of environmental protection. Accredited laboratories for environmental monitoring. Pollution and monitoring of the quality of air and waste gases. Pollution and monitoring of water quality (surface, groundwater and wastewater). Presentation of research monitoring. Presentation of surveillance monitoring. Laboratory exercises: Basic principles of monitoring and good laboratory practice. Standard requirements 17025:2017. Getting acquainted with an accredited lab for living and working environment. Methods and equipment for sampling of air and waste gases. Methods and equipment for water sampling and analysis. Sampling of water and field measurements. Laboratory analysis of water samples. Writing a water test report. Parameters in wastewater. The influence of water pollutants on human health. Landfill gases. Methods for determining the composition of landfill gas. Writing a report on the testing of landfill gas. Writing a plan and program for wastewater monitoring based on the requirements of legislation and material learned during the semester (case studies).
Lectures. Laboratory exercises. Consultations. In order to collect pre-examination points during the semester, students are obliged to attend regular lectures and laboratory exercises and pass two tests. After successfully completing the pre- examination obligations, students are entitled to take the exam. The examination consists of a written and mandatory oral part. During the semester students can pass the written part of the exam through two colloquiums. If the student does not pass the written part of the exam through the form of a colloquium, the student enters the written part of the exam which covers the material of the entire semester. The overall assessment of the exam is formed by summing the number of points won from pre-examination, colloquium (or written exam) and oral part of the exam.
