Acquisition of knowledge and enabling students for further application and practical work in the field of alternative energy in the domain of Renewable energy sources.
Ability to use acquired knowledge in further education and in the future engineering practice in the domain of Renewable energy sources.
Energy, economy and ecology (in general) Solar energy: resources, solar technologies (photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal conversion), solar systems (PV stand alone and utility interactive systems; distributed and central receiver systems), environmental impact. Utilization of ocean thermal energy, environmental impact. Wind energy: resources, wind energy utilization, vertical and horizontal axis wind turbines (VAWT, HAWT), systems based on wind energy (stand alone and utility interactive systems), technical problems and solutions, environmental impact. Hydro energy: resources, utilization of water power, estimation of available energy, impulse and reaction turbines, hydropower plants as part of electric power system, small hydropower plant, environmental impact Utilization of wave and tidal energy, environmental impact. Geothermal energy: types of geothermal sources, resources, technologies and systems for geothermal energy utilization (direct and indirect utilization), environmental impact. Biomass: biomass characteristics, technologies and systems for biomass utilization (combustion, gasification and pyrolysis), biofuels (biodiesel, biogas), environmental impact. Nuclear energy: processes for nuclear energy production, nuclear fuel, nuclear power plants (reactors, power plants), nuclear waste (legislation), and environmental impact. Energy storage: primary energy storage, thermal storage, mechanical energy storage, electrical energy storage, electrical ways of energy storage, biological energy storage.
Lectures, auditory and computer exercises, mentoring, consultations. In groups, under the supervision, students are writing term paper for the selected topic and individually defend it in front of colleagues and teacher. The choice of theme is in line with student interest. The final test covers the entire course content presented during the lectures and it is eliminatory. At the final evaluation score affects the term paper, test scores and overall activity during course.
