The course objective is to enable students to design and simulate simple digital electronic systems and functional units of microprocessors and understanding of structure, operation principle, specifications and design of simple microcomputer systems, as well as design and implementation of high-level applications for intelligent devices based on microcontrollers.
Student who successfully completes the course will be able to perform the following tasks for a specified, low complexity, microprocessor based device: - Design, simulate and implement hardware based on the given specification. - Model, design, simulate and implement applicative software in a high level programming language. - Integrate hardware and software components and test functionality of implemented intelligent device.
Boolean algebra. Numerical systems. Logic circuits. Standard combinational logic networks: a comparator, multiplexer, demux, encoder, decoder, adder. Standard sequential logic networks: flip-flops, memories, counters, registers. Complex digital systems. The structure of the simple microprocessors and microcomputers, as well as microcomputes sub-systems: CPU, memory subsystem, I/O. Interrupts. Serial communication protocols.
