Subject: Advanced microcontroller systems in medicine (17.DBMI11)

General information:

Category Scientific-professional
Scientific or art field Biomedicinsko inženjerstvo
ECTS 10

The goal of this subject is to prepare students for using the state-of-the-art microcontrollers in biomedical applications, as well as conducting research activities in this area.

A student who successfully passes this course will be able to: - design a biomedical device based on some of the contemporary microcontrollers, - choose the appropriate components for the design, having in mind requirements regarding functionality, reliability, energy consumption, development time, as well as the price of the realization, - design a printed circuit board using an appropriate CAD tool, - write a firmware for the designed device

Overview of the most frequently used microcontroller architectures: AVR, PIC, ARM, 8051. Microcontroller architectures with small power consumption: MSP430, Atmel picoPower, Microchip XLP, STM32. Methods of firmware update. Oscillators and real-time clocks. Linear and switching voltage regulators. Printed circuit board design in Altium designer. Basics of embedded operating systems: FreeRTOS, Linux, Android. Advanced communication protocols in embedded systems: CAN, RS-485, RS-422, Modbus, USB. Communication cechnologies in embedded systems: Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, LoRaWAN.

Lectures will be given to each student individually. The teacher will, in cooperation with each student, select his/her's areas of interest and propose a scientific literature and topic that a student should prepare and present. Student research work.
