Subject: Mold making technologies (17.P3502)

Native organizations units: Department of Production Engineering, Chair of Machining
General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Processes for Material Removal Processing
Interdisciplinary No
ECTS 5
Educational goal:

The goal of the course is to provide students with understanding of main mold making technologies and skills required for making of competition molds.

Educational outcome:

Acquired knowledge enable application of modern technologies to manufacturing tools for plastics. In that way good foundations are created for economic and quality production of this kind of tools.

Course content:

Mold importance and theirs influence on product quality. Basic elements (subsystems) of mold and importance of standardization. Materials for injection molds. Prototype, Small and Pre-Series Molds. Substantial steps for mold making. Evolution of most relevant mold manufacturing technologies. Importance of the CAx-process chain in mold making. Technological change of the mold making industry. Mold making by conventional machining (turning, drilling, milling, grinding). Mold making by non-conventional machining (EDM, ECM, LBM). Comparative study of HSM and EDM in injection mould manufacturing. Polishing technology in mold making. Surface finish and texture. Rapid tooling in mold making industry. The main rapid tooling processes in mold making. Advantages and disadvantages of RT methods for quick mold making. Mold cost estimation.

Teaching methods:

Lectures are realized in the form of lectures, auditory and computer practical classes, consultations and company visits. During lectures theoretical part is presented with appropriate practical examples. During auditory practical classes exercises are performed as well as appropriate projects and seminar papers. In order to expand practical knowledge, various companies are visited. During computer practical classes students are taught to use information technologies in the field of the subject content. Apart from that regular consultations are held for the purpose of clarification of subject content and help elaboration of projects and seminar papers. Final mark is formed on the basis of class attendance, l examination results, project and seminar paper.
