Introduction to the basic aspects of the durability of concrete structures and the mechanisms of corrosion of concrete and reinforcement for the design of concrete structures, taking into account the environmental impacts and the estimated service life. Acquiring knowledge on methodologies and methods for the assessment of the actual condition of concrete structures.
Student possesses specialized knowledge that is necessary for the design of concrete structures, taking into account the environmental impacts and the estimated service life. Student independently analyzes and evaluates the state of concrete structures using equipment for non-destructive and destructive tests, as well as the acquired knowledge necessary for the classification of defects and damages to the elements of concrete structures.
Durability of concrete structures: causes, failure mechanisms and manifestations of damages of concrete and reinforcement (physical and chemical corrosion), properties to obtain satisfactory durability, strategy for designing concrete structures from the aspect of demanded durability. Destructive and non-destructive test methods (equipment, procedures, application possibilities). Defects of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures. Types of damages and its form of appearance. Classification of damages of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures due to: structure overload, non-uniform settlement and accidental actions (fire, earthquake, explosion, etc.). Methodologies for monitoring and evaluation of condition of concrete structures. Technical regulation referring to routine inspections and providing durability of concrete structures. Examples of survey and assessment of characteristic structures.
Lectures, auditory, laboratory and site practice and consultations. During lectures, various types of presentations are used to explain the course content determined in the curriculum. At laboratory practice students can observe and individually perform different non-destructive testing of concrete. At auditory practice several case studies of assessment of different concrete structures are presented in order to explain methodologies, data processing and derivation of conclusion. Students activity is evaluated during lectures and exercises, performed site and laboratory tasks as well as elaboration and defense of subject design . The exam consists of a theoretical part. Parts of the lectures can be taken through one colloquium during semester. The theoretical part is taken orally in examination terms.
