Subject: Networked embedded systems (17.EM508E)

General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Electronics
ECTS 6

The goal of this course is to teach students the basics of computer networking and network technologies, with emphasis on stationary and wireless technologies used in modern embedded systems. Additionally, the students will have an opportunity to get familiar witharchitecture and basic functional blocks of IoT (Internet of Things) systems.

A student who passes this course will: - Be familiar with the way computer networks and network protocols work, on the level which enable a successful application of integrated network modules connected to microcontrollers. - Be trained to design IoT applications, including the choice of an appropriate technology having in mind both its advantages and shortcomings, as well as implementation of a complete system by integration of the network entities into a functional unity. - Be able to follow the literature and latest achievements in this field.

Computer networking via internet: OSI model, client-server architecture. Application layer protocols: HTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS. Transport and network layer protocols: UDP, TCP, IP. Communication technologies in local networks: Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth. Security in computer networks, types of attacks and protective measures: symmetrical encription with secret key, asymmetrical encription with public-private key pair, cryptographic hash functions, electronic signatures and certificates. Introduction to wireless sensor networks (WSN): design principles and topology of WSN, communication protocols and routing algorithms, coordination in wireless sensor and robot networks, WSN applications. Energy efficient protocols in WSN: ZigBee, BLE, LoRaWAN.
