Educational goal:

The aim of the curriculum for ESP 1 for Environmental Engineering and Safety at Work Engineering is reflected in the development of reading skills and understanding of professional contents, finding relevant information, writing summaries, development of oral communication within the profession, as well as preparing presentations for the purpose of future professions. In short , students acquire the basic terminology of Environmental and Workplace Safety Engineering and grammatical structures of technical English.

Educational outcome:

Students will learn the basic language skills that include: a) reading and understanding professional articles, b ) listening and understanding oral presentations, c ) writing short forms ( letters, reports , summaries, compositions ) d ) dialogue / information sharing / discussion, with the expression of opinions, attitudes or viewpoints using appropriate phrases and expressions, collocations, etc. . They will be able to identify adequate grammatical structures and recognize meanings of new lexical items. In other words, students will be able to classify, systematize and summarize key information from the text owing to the knowledge of grammar structures and vocabulary, which will enable them to use technical literature in English.

Course content:

Reading and analyzing authentic texts from the aspect of technical terminology and grammar structures. Determining the forms and uses of basic tenses in technical discourse: Tenses - Present (Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous) Past (Simple, Continuous, Perfect), Future (all ways of expressing the future). Practicing asking questions. Analyzing and practicing passive structures in technical discourse. Contrasting active and passive sentences in English. Contrasting the use of passive forms in the English and Serbian language. Conditional sentences (Zero Conditional, First Conditional, Second Conditional), phrasal verbs (Phrasal verbs).

Teaching methods:

Teaching ESP 1 for Environmental and Workplace Safety Engineering is based on the fundamental principles of interactive teaching method, as well as methods to encourage students to become independent learners. a) Teaching methods: interactive methods in accordance with the communicative approach , PBL and CSA methods with the aim of transferring activities from teacher to student. b) Forms of work : lectures , consultations. c) Aspects of work : team / doubles / individual. d) Teaching techniques : classification, categorization, systematization of knowledge and information.
