Educational goal:

Enabling students to develop abstract thinking and acquire knowledge about modeling geometric shapes and their topological analysis. Modeling encompasses a wide spectrum of data structures for encoding geometric shapes. Topological analysis is mainly based on persistent homology.

Educational outcome:

To use the acquired knowledge in engineering subjects and in practice, postulate and solve mathematical models in engineering subjects using the knowledge about modeling and topological shape analysis.

Course content:

Simplicial, cubical and cell complexes. Data structures for complexes. Navigation and operations on complexes and associated data structures. Euler characteristic, Betti numbers, homology and cohomology groups and generators, persistence.

Teaching methods:

Lectures. Consultations. The lectures are organized in combined form. The presentation of the theoretical part during the lecture classes is followed by the characteristic examples which contribute to better understanding of the subject matter. In addition to lectures there are regular consultations. Through research and study work the student will, on the bases of scientific journals and other relevant literature that has been studied independently, develop further understanding of the material covered in lectures. Working with the course teacher the student develops the ability to independently work on a scientific paper.
