Subject: Selected topics in Applied Statistics (17.0M510)

General information:

Category Academic-general educative
Scientific or art field Teorijska i primenjena matematika
ECTS 5

Acquisition of basic theoretical and applied knowledge in certain areas of statistics, selected due to intensive application in engineering sciences. Students will be trained to understand data and to choose an adequate statistical method in accordance with the specific needs, implement it with the help of statistical software and interpret in detail the obtained results. The character of the subject is applied; through the analysis of real data obtained from the engineering disciplines, students are trained for teamwork as well as for interdisciplinary cooperation with engineering peers.

Students will use mastered knowledge and skills by abstracting some real problems from the domain of quantitative analyzes of mass phenomena, either independently or as a part of an interdisciplinary team, analyzing them with the help of acquired knowledge, and drawing scientifically based conclusions in the presence of uncertainty. The theoretical part of the knowledge will be used in the further course of studies and scientific research work.

Elements of descriptive statistics: measures of position and shape; empirical rule, Chebyshev's theorem. Inferential statistics: parametric and non-parametric tests for independent and paired samples (t-test for independent and paired samples, Mann-Whitney test, Wilcoxon sign test). Analysis of variance (one-way, repeated measurements, Kruscal-Wallis, Friedman). Correlation and regression analysis. Data reduction techniques: cluster analysis and principal component analysis.

Lectures; computing exercises; study and research work; consultations. In the lectures, the theoretical part of the material is presented accompanied by characteristic examples for easier understanding of the teaching subject. In the exercises, which follow the lectures, practical problems on data sets from engineering disciplines will be analyzed and the presented material from the lectures will be deepened. Through study and research work, the students independently, using additional scientific and professional literature, deepen knowledge in certain areas. In addition to lectures and exercises, consultations will also be held regularly.
