Subject: Principles of digital communications (17.SK300)

Native organizations units: Department of Power, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering

General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Telecommunications and Signal Processing
ECTS 5

This course represents an introduction to the field of digital communications and its main goal is familiarizing the students with systems for digital signal transmission, their main components and methods of analysis. The emphasis is placed on baseband transmission, estimation of the performance parameters of the corresponding systems, as well as the transmitter/receiver design.

After successfully completing the course, students will: 1.) Be familiar with the main components of systems for baseband digital signal transmission and will be able to describe their functionality, 2.) Possess the theoretical knowledge necessary for analyzing such systems.

Introduction to statistical theory of communications. The transmitter of digital signals – scrambling and line coding. The probability of error in baseband digital signal transmission – impact of noise and inter-symbol interference. The receiver of digital signals – equalization, matched filter.

Lectures, tutorials, computer practice, lab practice, consultations. The student can take only a certain part of the material which is a unique whole (section) within the syllabus of the subject. This form of taking is not obligatory and is declared as the Final Exam I part.
