The objectives of this course are to: provide students with the knowledge necessary to design a complete casting technology including gating and risering calculations; introduce students to the latest methods in casting process simulation; introduce students to common casting defects and suggested remedies; introduce students to the latest casting processes and technologies.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: describe the concepts of surface tension, viscosity, and fluidity of molten metals; describe the process of formation of solidification shrinkage and gas porosity in castings; design gating and risering systems and select required pouring temperature; perform basic simulation of casting process and analyze results; identify basic casting defects and name generic remedies; describe peculiarities of casting magnesium and titanium alloys; describe lost foam, rheocasting and thixomolding processes; describe process of casting metallic foam parts;
Surface tension. Viscosity. Fluidity. Gating systems. Contraction of metals and alloys. Casting solidification. Feeding of castings. Numerical modeling of casting processes. Casting of titanium and its alloys. Casting of magnesium and its alloys. Casting defects. Lost foam casting. Production of metallic foam castings.
Teaching is held interactively as lectures and laboratory and computer practice. During lectures, the theoretical part of the teaching content is presented and supplemented by characteristic practical examples for better understanding. Discussion between students is frequently initiated in order to increase motivation, expand student understanding, broaden student perspectives and clarify potential ambiguities. During laboratory practice, the obtained knowledge is practically applied on the available laboratory equipment. During computer practice, the students are receiving on-hand experience in casting process computer simulation. Apart from lectures and practice, consultations are held regularly.
