Subject: Safety of chemical hazards, fire and explosion (17.ZR504A)

Native organizations units: Department of Environmental Engineering and Occupational Safety and Health
General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Environment Protection Engineering
Interdisciplinary No
ECTS 7
Educational goal:

Improvement of existing and acquiring new knowledge about explosive, flammable and toxic characteristics of matter and chemical compounds that are produced, used or stored in the work processes and thus can cause serious consequences to the health of employees, work injuries, occupational diseases or threats for the environment.

Educational outcome:

Acquiring the knowledge of basic modalities which are manifested in mechanical, thermal and toxic effects of different chemical compounds. Knowing the conditions under which certain substances will be explosively decomposed with the release of flame, considerable amounts of energy or different degradation products. Theoretical and practical knowledge about the proper selection of the appropriate extinguishing media depending on the type of combustible matter, not only in terms of fire protection, but also in terms of health and safety at work and environmental protection. Knowing the degree of toxicity of individual chemical compounds and implementation of adequate safety measures in handling them.

Course content:

Theoretical classes: Direct effects of harmful substances (modes of action of toxic substances, toxicity assessment, poisons and degree of toxicity, risk and hazard classification of harmful substances). Indirect effects of harmful substances (fire and categories of fire, risk assessment of chemical fire, risk of fire and explosion). Transportation of hazardous materials. Storage and packaging of dangerous materials. Working with hazardous and harmful substances. Safety measures. Hazardous waste materials. Practical classes: During practical classes, practical application and experiments illustrate topics covered in lectures, thus contributing to better visualization and understanding of the themes elaborated at the theoretical classes.

Teaching methods:

Teaching process is carried out through lectures, auditory and laboratory exercises. Lectures are caried out with PowerPoint presentations, video attachments and animations. During the semester it is obligatory to attend lectures, as well as auditory and laboratory exercises, which is part of pre-exam obligations. Within the framework of pre-exam obligations on the course is also term paper. The consultations in this course are group or individual. After successfully completed pre-exam obligations, students take practical part of the exam, and after that the oral part of the exam.
