Subject: Occupational Safety and Health in Waste Management (17.ZR300)

General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Environment Protection Engineering
ECTS 6

Training students to percive the overall waste management system from the aspect of occupational safety and health (OSH). The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the aspect of occupational safety in all parts of the waste management system from generation, through collection, transportation, transhipment, recycling, energy utilization and finally disposal of waste. In order to ensure a safe workplace and reduce occupational exposure to unfavorable effects, OSH issues are conducted through an analysis of operational procedures, the selection of protective equipment and the optimization of work organization.

Students acquire the necessary knowledge to understand the specificities of waste management issues in order to be able to choose optimal solutions in the field of occupational safety in all segments of the waste management system. Students are able to implement legal requirements related to the waste management, to point out possible improvements regarding working environment conditions and to reduce the risks from professional exposure to negative impacts in the field of solid waste management.

Theoretical classes: The concept of waste, types of waste, the composition of municipal waste, the characteristics of municipal waste, National and EU legislation in the field of waste management, concept of waste management system, waste management plans. Occupational safety aspects in waste management segments: Waste generation and collection, waste transportation equipment, waste separation facilities, waste recycling processes, municipal waste combustion, mechanical biological treatment of MBT, composting and anaerobic digestion of municipal waste, landfill of municipal waste. Financial implications of waste management. Practical classes: Exercises are discussed in more detail on lecture materials using case studies in all areas of waste management. Students are trained to independently make decisions about the choice of adequate protective equipment adapted to the specifics of the workplace environment. Through the monitoring of workplace conditions, possibilities for improving the work process in the field of collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste are considered.

Lecture, computer and laboratory exercises and consultations. The lectures present the theoretical part of the course followed by appropriate examples from practice, for easier understanding and adoption of the knowledge. Computer exercises are based on usage of software tools for modeling of processes in different segments of the waste management system, as well as software tools for planning the structure of the waste management system. Laboratory exercises includes examine the specifics of working environment conditions of different segments of the waste management system and evaluate procedures and measures to reduce the negative impacts. In addition to lectures and exercises, consultations are also held regularly. Written part of the exam can be taken through the form of two colloquiums Requirements for taking the exam are computer and laboratory exercises.
