Educational goal:

Acquiring knowledge of biomass facilities, aiming to achieve sustainable bioeconomy, starting from project idea, planning to successful biomass facilities managing

Educational outcome:

Skills in engineering approaches to deal with challenges of planning and managing, which result with efficient and sustainable biomass facilities that are in line with principles of bioeconomy

Course content:

Introduction in the subject, acquaintance of students with content and obligations. Biomass types and forms (agricultural, wooden, aquaculture) and properties. Meaning and basic principles of bioeconomy, with special focus on environmental impact. Definition and classification of biomass facilities. Approaches for planning and managing of biomass facilities. Defining terms of references. Development of general design. Conduction of technical prefeasibility study. Conduction of economic prefeasibility study. Conduction of environmental impact assessment, including LCA. Examples of planning and management of biomass facilities: combustion of solid biomass to generate heat energy or combined heat and power; bioethanol– liquid biomass for transport obtained by alcohol fermentation; biogas and biomethane– gaseous biomass obtained by anaerobic fermentation; bioplastics– materials obtained from renewable resources.

Teaching methods:

Auditory lectures, test, seminar with oral defense, oral examination.
