Subject: Hazardous Waste Management (17.Z409B)

Native organizations units: Department of Environmental Engineering and Occupational Safety and Health
General information:

Category Scientific-professional
Scientific or art field Environment Protection Engineering
Interdisciplinary No
ECTS 7
Educational goal:

Introducing students to the basics of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management in order to minimize adverse impacts on the environment. The goal of this course is to acquaint students with the specifics of hazardous waste management arising from the properties of hazardous substances, as well as procedures and technologies that can reduce or completely eliminate the negative effect of hazardous substances on human health and the environment.

Educational outcome:

Students acquire the knowledge they need to understand the nature of the hazardous waste and hazardous materials as well as handling specificity and advanced hazardous waste management solutions. Having mastered this course, students are in a position to safely operate hazardous waste and understand the project design criteria of storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste.

Course content:

Theoretical classes: Hazardous waste characteristics, Hazardous Waste Labeling, Transport and storage of Hazardous Waste. Biological, physical - chemical and thermal treatment and safe disposal of hazardous waste. Special hazardous waste stream management (medical, pharmaceutical, household hazardous waste). National and international regulations in the filed of hazardous waste management. Practical lectures: adequate examples and computational tasks related to the knowledge from the theoretical lectures are elaborated with active participation of students.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, auditory exercises and consultations. Lectures: Lectures are concerned with the theoretical part of the teaching material. Exercises: During exercises to accompany the lecture, teaching material is elaborated with practical examples and students become more familiar with the design rules of temporary and permanent disposal of hazardous waste, as well as the way of selecting vessels for storage of hazardous waste.
