Subject: Separation processes in environmental engineering (17.Z310A)

General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Environment Protection Engineering
ECTS 7

- To introduce the basis of separation processes, to the students; - To train students for application of separation processes in the treatment of waste streams.

After completing the course and passing the exam, the student will be able to: - List and describe the main types of separation processes used in the treatment of waste streams; - Select and design the equipment used in the treatment of wastewater, sludge and waste gases.

The main types of separation processes used in the treatment of waste streams. Phase separation - basic principles of phase separation. Thermal operations. Evaporation. Condensation. Drying of materials. Mechanical separation processes and equipment for the mechanical separation (rotary filters, centrifuges, grinders, sedimentation tanks). Equilibrium separation processes - phase equilibrium. Equipment for the equilibrium phase separation (absorption, distillation, adsorption, ion exchange, extraction and crystallization). Speed separation processes - membrane separation (equipment for micro and ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, dialysis). Criteria for the selection of appropriate separation processes. Order of the individual units in the formation of the optimal separation process. Single-stage and multi-stage separation processes.

Lectures. Computing and computer exercises that are based on specific practical problems solving and designing of the equipment for the separation of pollutants from waste streams. Individual and group consultations. During the semester, students are required to attend lectures, laboratory and computing classes. After successfully realized examination prerequisites, students take the final exam in written (computing part) and oral form (theoretical part). Written part of the exam can be quarterly taken through the two colloquiums.
