Within the course, alternative approaches to designing and planning of urban spaces will be analyzed in a wider theoretical and practical context. In such a framework, the primary goal will be the definition of adequate approaches that, through the creation of a link between formal and informal methods, can result in a more sustainable urban environment.

Students will be able to comprehend alternative approaches to urban planning and planning based on linking formal and informal methods. The result of the work within the subject will include the development of a constructive and critical determination according to the complex reality in modern cities based on the connection between abstract and practical knowledge.

The relationship between formal and informal spheres of urban life - spatial, social, economic, cultural and political aspects of dichotomous and dualist models; Conceptual definitions and historical perspective; "Informalities" in modern cities: beyond formal plans and regulations; Alternative approaches to urban development; Forms of "informalities" in modern cities - temporary uses of space, ephemeral structures, artistic practices, forms of "self-organization", self-building of houses, illegal inhabiting...; The settings of a design and planning approach based on the socio-spatial continuum and the interaction between the formal and the informal.

Lectures, Design Practice, Consultations, Workshop. The course grade is formed based on the lecture and practice attendance, project grade and oral part of the examination.
