ECTS 4

The course offers an insight into current theoretical and methodological approaches in the research and understanding of contemporary urban phenomena. The aim of the course is based on the critical thinking of the relation between information technologies and urban systems, with the focus on the basic notions and concepts related to spatial and urban data, their characteristics, and possibilities for collection, analysis and implication in scientific research and practical work.

Adopting the knowledge on the theoretical and methodological approaches related to research and understanding of the contemporary city; Ability to understand the basic ideas related to urban and spatial data, and their use in the research of urban phenomena; Ability for critical understanding of the role of information technologies in the transformations of urban space; Ability to understand main challenges in the planning and development of contemporary cities based on technological development; Developing critical thinking, adoption of the language of research and ability for critical use of resources.

Digital technologies and a large amount of generated data transform the material, economic, social, cultural, and political spheres of urban reality. These transformations require new theoretical and methodological approaches to understand space, spatial levels and factors that affect complex urban systems. The syllabus of the course focuses on understanding the relationship between the information technologies and urban phenomena, through addoption of the basic notions and concepts on spatial and urban data, databases, urban indicators, smart city and big data, based on a critical presentation of current theories and methodologies in a given field.

Method of critical analysis; illustrative-demonstrative methods; methods of synthesis of acquired knowledge; interaction between participants in the learning process.
