Within the course complementary and mutually constitutive relationship between the city and the media of the film will be explained to students, with an emphasis on the potential of moving images as an analytical tool. Students will learn how the research of the representation of cities in films, can help in the interpretation of the history of urban development, that is, in the interpretation of socio-spatial changes taking place from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.
Through the study of cinematographic representations of urban spaces, as well as film language in general, students will improve the skills of critical thinking (viewing) and learn how to open a debates in the field of architecture and urban planning. Students will be directed to understanding how filmic representations of cities point to important facts that can be used as vital elements in the establishment of new theories dealing with urban environments.
