Subject: Modeling and simulation of thermochemical and casting processes (17.SMI002)

Native organizations units: Department of Production Engineering, Chair of Forming Technologies and Surface Engineering
General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Livenje, termička obrada, inženjerstvo površina i nanotehnologije
Interdisciplinary No
ECTS 5
Educational goal:

The objective of the course is to introduce the student to the fundamentals of modeling and simulation of heat treatment and metal casting processes.

Educational outcome:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: describe the basic phisical phenomena and processes that take place during casting and heat treatment; describe the basic methods of spatial and termoral discretizations used in computer simulations; list the most frequently used software packages for the simulation of casting and heat treatment, and state their basic characteristics, advantages and disadvantages; perform elementary computer simulation of heat treatment and casting process.

Course content:

Introduction. Basics of heat transfer. Boundary conditions and thermophysical properties of metals in solid and molten states. Basics of numerical methods. Modeling of residual stresses and part distortion. Modeling of microstructure evolution and properties of finished parts. Use of process simulation techniques during product design stage.

Teaching methods:

Teaching is held interactively as lectures and laboratory and computer practice. During lectures, the theoretical part of the teaching content is presented and supplemented by characteristic practical examples for better understanding. During lectures, discussion between students is frequently initiated in order to increase motivation, expand understanding of presented matter, broaden perspectives and clarify potential ambiguities. During laboratory practice, the obtained knowledge is practically applied on the available laboratory equipment. During practice students work on their class project. Apart from lectures and practice, consultations are held regularly.
