Subject: Network Security (19.SEM021)

General information:

Category Theoretical-methodological
Scientific or art field Applied Computer Science and Informatics
ECTS 6

Students learn about theoretical basics and technologies for implementing security measures in computer networks.

After successfully completing the course, students gain theoretical and practical knowledge about security in computer networks. Students are able to show skills to draw own conclusions and understand what makes systems vulnerable and be able to predict new network attack methods before they become a reality. Also, students are able to critically analyze, design and evaluate secure networks based on provided security requirements.

Introduction to computer network security: definition, basic concepts, security requirements, network topologies. Threat classifications related to CIA triad: eavesdropping (confidentiality), man-in-the-middle (integrity), and denial-of-service (availability). Types of active and passive attacks: spoofing, modification, fabrication, tunneling attack, sinkhole, sybil, traffic analysis, eavesdropping, monitoring. Types of protection: authentication/authorization, access control, network segmentation, logging, and traffic monitoring, reputation-based-security, secure protocols, service isolation, cryptographic traffic protection, virtual private networks (VPN). Network defense tools: firewalls, IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection System/Intrusion Prevention System), jump servers, access control lists (ACL), SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) tools. Wireless and Bluetooth security. Anonymity and onion routing. Penetration testing.

Lectures. Computer practice. Consultations. The examination is oral. The final grade is formed on the basis of achievement in the laboratory practice classes and oral examination.
