Educational goal:

Acquiring basic knowledge about the design, dynamics and maintenence of motor vehicles

Educational outcome:

Ability to solve engineering tasks that require knowledge of the principles of operation, dynamics and maintenence of motor vehicles.

Course content:

Classification of motor vehicles. Vehicle dimensions and masses. Vehicle main systems, structure and drive layouts. Role, principles of operation and designs of components of vehicle systems: 1) Transmission - clutch, gearbox, drive shafts, final drive, differential, transfer gearbox; 2) Wheels and tyres; 3) Suspension system - elastic elements, dampers, wheel guiding mechanisms; 4) Steering system - steering gear, steering mechanisms; 5) Brake system - brakes, command and transmission components, endurance brake systems. Tire mechanics: basic concepts, rolling resistance, longitudinal slip, adhesion for driving and braking wheel and longitudinal forces. Tractive performance characteristics of vehicles: equations of motion, aerodynamic drag, powertrain characteristics impact on vehicle tractive performance characteristics, acceleration, braking. Basics of vehicle lateral dynamics. Introduction in vehicle exploitation, maintenance and repair. Technical fluids: fuels, lubricant etc. Introduction in tribology.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, laboratory, auditory and computing classes, consultations.
