ECTS 6

The objectives of this course are: provide to students knowledge necessary for selection of adequate materials for tools and machine parts used in production of plastic components; provide to students knowledge necessary for selection of appropriate heat treatment processes, selection of equipment and definition of key parameters required for successful conduction of the chosen processes.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. define and describe transformation processes occurring in material during heat treatment; 2. describe hardening, tempering, ageing and deep cooling processes, and name their key parameters; 3. describe processes that result from the interaction of material and its surrounding atmosphere; 4. name types of steels used for tools and parts of machines applied in plastic processing; 5. analyze given tool and/or machine part and in accordance with the required properties select adequate tool/part material and its heat treatment processes, and define all necessary parameters for the selected processes; 6. select equipment necessary for conduction of specific heat treatment process; 7. name and describe procedures necessary for ensuring the required quality in heat treatment.

Introduction to processes occurring in material during its heating and cooling. Heating and cooling parameters and their influence on the results of heat treatment. Hardening, tempering, ageing, and deep cooling processes. Effect of the surrounding atmosphere on the material during its heat treatment. Heat treatment in vacuum, salts, and controlled atmospheres. Types of steels used for tools and parts of machines applied in plastic processing, and specifics of their heat treatment. Control of heat treatment processes. Basic equipment necessary for conduction of heat treating processes.

Teaching is held interactively as lectures and laboratory practice. During lectures, the theoretical part of the teaching content is presented and supplemented by characteristic practical examples for better understanding. During lectures, discussion between students is frequently initiated in order to increase motivation, expand understanding of presented matter, broaden perspectives and clarify potential ambiguities. During laboratory practice, the obtained knowledge is practically applied on the available laboratory equipment. During practice students work on their class project. Apart from lectures and practice, consultations are held regularly.
