General information:

Category Scientific-professional
Scientific or art field Mechanics
Interdisciplinary Yes
ECTS 6
Educational goal:

Knowledge about modern approaches in the field of engineering decision making will enable understanding, monitoring and improving the mechanical engineering. The goal is to improve scientific skills, academic and practical skills in the field of engineering decisions. In addition, the aim is to introduce modern methods of processing and analysis of experimental data. The intention is that through this course student expands their knowledge of the concepts and definitions in the field of design, construction and production of machines and devices as well as their exploitation on the basis of modeling and experimental measurements of parameters relevant for the operation of the plant.Students have to learn how to solve the problem set and to develop the ability to identify problems in terms of identification, formulation and possible solutions and to perfect the principles of engineering judgment and decision-making.

Educational outcome:

Students have to obtain: basic knowledge of the problem of modeling of mechanical systems, ability to independently solve theoretical and practical problems using scientific methods and procedures. Creative abilities and the ability for independent judgment of students for solving problems have to be developed. After this course the student is able to: think critically, logically connects theoretical and experimental knowledge, to apply the knowledge in engineering disciplines, to make better communicates with other engineers and improve his work in a team, to improve creative thinking, demonstrate understanding and skills and to use the knowledge gained to design new solutions in engineering problems. At the end of the course the student qualifies for use of literature, application of experiments and computer programs for multi-criteria decision making, and also in seeking the necessary information to improve the level of knowledge in the field of engineering decisions.

Course content:

Basic setting design and construction of machines and plants. The rotors as the basic elements of the machine. Dynamic modeling of rotating plant. Analytical approaches to solving the problem of oscillation of the rotor. A typical system parameters. Selection of parameters and methodology of the survey. Experimental methods of measuring machine working parameters. Methods of controlling the characteristic parameters occasional measurements and continuous monitoring. Decision making using the method of comparison of the measured values. Decision making by comparing of measured values with standardized sizes. Selection of characteristic parameters for decision-making. Deciding on the basis of analytical and measured values. Methods of multi-criteria decision. Methods of prediction of working capacity of the machine. Applying the developed method to specific engineering examples.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, research and consultation. Lectures presents the theoretical part of the course with the use of modern equipment and information and communication technologies. Through lectures students acquire and master the modern scientific knowledge, scientific methods and procedures by trained for independent study and research work. In addition to lectures there are regular consultations. Research work includes all forms of instruction in the function of the direct training of students for research, writing scientific papers and doctoral dissertations. Research work includes active monitoring of primary scientific sources, organizing and conducting numerical simulations and experimental research.
