The aim of the "Science of Design in Industrial Engineering and Management Engineering" is to master the basics of the research approach of the Design Science, in which the researcher is interested in providing a practical solution, which is to develop an artifact to solve a practical problem. The approach to design science is on the move between, on the one hand, traditional scientific approaches that are mostly descriptive, and, on the other hand, the context of conditioned knowledge created by solving problems in industrial practice. By mastering the basics of design science, students will be given the opportunity to use a new scientifically rigorous research approach in cases where research requires close cooperation with organizations and the validation of new ideas in practice.

As a course outcome, students are expected to get the basics for applying a research approach to science on the design and development of artifacts to solve the practical problem as the basis of the approach. Furthermore, the expected outcome is that students are trained to clearly identify problems for which the application of design science is adequate. Also, the expected outcome is that students are able to apply project design methods to a specific problem in their research.
