Subject: Theory of Constraints (17.IM2316)

Native organizations units: Chair of Production Systems, Organization and Management
General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Proizvodni i uslužni sistemi, organizacija i menadžment
Interdisciplinary No
ECTS 4
Educational goal:

The objectives of Theory of Constraints include: (1) further development of students knowledge in the field of organization and management of business systems; (2) acquiring systematic knowledge in the field of theory of constraints; (3) expanding the acquired knowledge of students for managing production systems using a project-oriented approach, with a focus on balanced and synchronized use of constrained resources; (4) studying of management techniques based on the principles of theory of constraints; (5) methodological and practical training of students to recognize constraints in the system and to apply principles of theory of constraints in solving problems.

Educational outcome:

After completing this course, student is able to: (1) define the basic concepts of the theory of constraints; (2) identify the constraints within industrial systems and engineering projects; (3) make distinction between different areas of application of the theory of constraints; (4) explain necessary steps in the process of implementing the theory of constraints; (5) recognize the potential sources of system constraints; (6) apply different methods to overcome the problems caused by the constraint of the system.

Course content:

Introduction to the Theory of constraints. Basic concepts of the Theory of constraints. Identification of constraints in the system. Internal and external constraints. Throughput accounting. Drum-Buffer-Rope principle. Thinking processes. TOC rule. Differences between TOC rule and linear programming. Synchronization and optimization of the system.
