The educational goal of this course is to introduce students to the concept of program and portfolio management, as a discipline in the field of modern project management. By understanding the difference between project management, program and portfolio management, students will gain competencies to apply program and portfolio management as a strategic tool and will enable them to coordinate projects in line with the requirements and strategic goals defined by the company.

Students who successfully pass pre-exam obligations and the exam are able to: (1) understand the corporate governance strategy through projects; (2) link strategies and other business initiatives of the company with relevant projects; (3) define priorities within projects and programs; (4) select projects and programs to be implemented; (5) develop and use tools for tracking projects in the portfolio; (5) to properly allocate resources between projects; (6) to establish the basis for the creation of an effective Project management office.

Differences between project, program and portfolio. Fundamentals of the portfolio and program management process. Portfolio and program management components. Life-cycle of portfolio and program management. Aligning of projects, programs and portfolio with company strategy. Selection of projects. Project Management Office. Creating a project management methodology. Portfolio monitoring and Control. Portfolio and program management tools.

This course includes lectures (discussion and interactive presentations), giving basic concepts and theoretical background, with the occasional visits of guest lecturers from industry, and practical classes where students analyze practical examples and solve case studies. Students, in smaller groups, are working on a specific tasks and project assignments, in order to apply the acquired knowledge (project management office working simulation, working on case studies and application of software tools for projects prioritization).
