ECTS 4

The subject aims to inform students about basic principles of research methodology. Students will obtain knowledge necessary for independent research and research problem definition, research design, conducting research, scientific reasoning and research results presentation and application.

Students will be able to independently plan, design and conduct a research. They will be competent to formulate relevant research questions, to identify crucial factors in the relevant context, to select and apply addequate research method and to draw conclusions with implications. Also, students will become competent in research results presentation and publication, using contemporary software tools.

This subject is organized in the following units: defining research problem; literature review and referencing; research variables; methods and levels of measurement; direct and indirect measurement; reliability, validity, accuracy and measurement errors; research designs; control groups; sampling principles and methods; drawing conclusions from research; reporting research results; tools for research and publication (LATEX, MS Word, Mendeley); basic principles of master thesis writing.

The course will be realized through combination of lectures and practical work in groups. Lectures will be accompanied by case studies from academic research in the innovation field that illustrate how the research methodology helps generating conclusions and making decisions in the innovation projects. By engaging in small group work, students will experience research project from start to finish: they will identify a research problem in the field of innovation, define the research question, design the research process, review literature, construct or adapt measuring tools, use statistics software and draw conclusions that offer solution to the starting problem.
