Subject: Advanced Data Models and Database Systems (17.IISD14)

Native organizations units: No data
General information:

Category Scientific-professional
Scientific or art field Information-Communication Systems
Interdisciplinary No
ECTS 10
Educational goal:

Introducing students to advanced data models, database systems and formal methods for database representation, management and integration. Enabling students: to engage in actual projects in the field of database systems and to independently solve theoretical and practical problems, to understand and to use contemporary knowledge, to be able to follow contemporary achievements, to be independent and creative, to connect knowledge from various fields and to apply it, and to solve problems in the field of data models and database systems using scientific methods.

Educational outcome:

Understanding the contemporary data models and database systems and acquiring knowledge and skills required for the use of advanced methods and techniques for database design, implementation, exploitation, migration, integration and re-engineering. Enabling students to critically analyze the adequacy of the application of existing methods, techniques and tools, to find the directions and ways of possible improvement of existing ones, or to develop, independently or in the team, new methods, techniques and tools in the research field of the data models and data management systems. Researching the literature, students are introduced to the latest knowledge in research field, to methods for solving similar or new problems and with scientific approaches in their solving in the research field of data models and database systems.

Course content:

Contemporary data models and database systems and their development trends. Distributed databases. The integration of data from different sources. Data warehouse systems. XML databases. Spatial databases. Temporal databases. NoSQL databases. Embedded databases. Big data Systems. Innovative Data Models and Data Integrity in Big Data and NoSQL Systems. Case studies for the application of contemporary data models and database systems.

Teaching methods:

Teaching activity depends on the number of listeners, i.e. mentor or group approach. During the course, students are required to prepare a project and its defense. The students and the teachers meet on a regular basis with the goal of training the student to conduct research and publish in the chosen area.
