ECTS 6

The goal of this course is the gaining knowledge in the field of polymer materials (thermoplastic materials, thermoset materials, elastomeric material, composites) and the technological methods for polymer processing (extrusion, injection molding, termoforming, blow molding, etc.).

This course will enable students to gain knowledge in the field of polymer materials, their characteristics and application, as well as methods related to polymer processing.

Introduction to main polymer types, mechanical, chemical and phyisical propreties. Intorduction to plastic processing technology, concepts, definitions. Theoretical basis of polymers processing. Continuous methods of plastics processing, calendering, plastic extrusion (making pipes, profiles, plates, sheets, etc.). Plastic injection molding, direct plastic molding, transfer molding. Casting of plastics. Hot plastic forming. Blow molding. Foaming processes, extrusion and pressing. Composites based on polymers and their processing. Machining. Bonding and welding. Finishing (polishing, plating, painting, stamping ...). Basic characteristics of elastomers. Rubber molding technology. Rubber and plastic recycling.

Lectures are realized interactively through theoretical, laboratory and computer classes. In lectures theoretical part is presented with characteristic examples for better understanding of subject content. Acquired knowledge is practically applied in laboratory practical classes by the application of avalilable laboratory equipment. Computer exercises comprise the use of information and communication technologies for gaining knowledge and practical skills in the field of study.Visits to contemporary business systems should enable practical knowledge in this field of study.
