Acquiring basic knowledge about the fundamental principles of electromechanical power conversion, constructional details and operation principles of rotating electrical machines, including their mechanical and exploitation characteristics, and control methods.
After having followed the course, students will be able to understand electrical and mechanical characteristics of DC and AC electrical machines, and their control principles.
Basic principles of electromechanical energy conversion: coupling field, rotational converter, conditions for generating nonzero torque, conversion losses, equations of mathematical model. Basic information of the rotating electrical machines: stator and rotor, magnetic circuit and windings. Classification of rotating electric machines. DC machines: constructional details and principle of operation, excitation methods, separately excited machine, electromotive force and electromagnetic torque, mathematical model, steady-state equivalent circuit, mechanical characteristic, power losses and power balance, speed regulation, power converters for DC machine. Induction machines: constructional details and principle of operation, principles of torque generation, mathematical model, steady-state equivalent circuit, torque expression, mechanical characteristic, power losses and power balance, variable speed induction machines, power converters for induction machine. Synchronous Machines: constructional details and principle of operation, steady-state operation, equivalent circuit, mechanical characteristic, permanent magnet synchronous motors, power converters for synchronous motor.
