Subject: Steel and timber structures (17.GG27HP)

General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Konstrukcije u građevinarstvu
ECTS 6

Acquiring knowledge from the basis of the design of steel and timber structures in standardized buildings.

Theoretical and practical competences for autonomous steel and timber design and construction of simpler elements and connections in the typified building structures.

Steel structures - application. Steel production and steel products. Properties of steel. Design concepts and methods. Fasteners: bolts, high-strength bolts and welding. Splice connections of axially compressed and tensioned rods. Splice connections in beam girders. Axially compressed members. Buckling lengths. Beams. Trusses. Steel structures in buildings. Basis of design and general layout of industrial hall. Design of structural elements of single and multi-bay halls: roof coverings, purlins, facade columns and beams (calculation and detailing). Bracing and stiffening. Design of main bearing girders (statistical systems, calculation and construction). Timber structures - application. Timber and wood based products. Technical and mechanical properties. Design concepts and methods. Fasteners: bolts, nails, split rings. Splice connections and joints (carpentry and bearing static). Traditional timber structures - roofs, trusses. Glulam timber structures - production, systems of industrial halls. Maintenance of steel and timber structures.

Course is performed interactively through lectures, tutorials and consultations. Lectures give the theoretical parts that are illustrated with characteristic examples. The tutorials handle numerical examples that fully follow the program of lectures and successively train students to produce home works from both parts of subject trough which they achieve design skills necessary for the construction practice. The active work in tutorials is underlined, ie the completion of certain positions of graphic works at the classes. Additional explanations and assistance are provided by individual and/or group consultations. Regular attendance of classes is obligatory. For a positive final assessment, the student is obliged to realize the minimal knowledge limit in all forms of pre-examination and examination obligations. During the semester in which the subject is going on, the first part of the subject can be passed through a organized colloquium.
