ECTS 10

Acquiring superb theoretical knowledge and mastering the methods and techniques of research of current problems of modern timber structures, in order to prepare students for innovative scientific work and extension of existing knowledge with multidisciplinary approach.

Capability for autonomous research work in the field of timber structures, with the developed ability to critically evaluate existing achievements and the possibilities of perceiving, conceiving and solving of new critical problems with the application of an interdisciplinary approach.

Modern trends in the research and development of timber structures: state-of-the art report (new materials, fasteners and connections). Contemporary building codes and design aspects of timber structures according to limit states. Rheological phenomena of timber structures. Behavior of timber structures (materials and connections) in accidental actions. Methods and techniques of laboratory and in situ testing of elements, connections and structural assemblies made from timber and/or wood based products. Methods of processing and evaluation of results, analysis and interpretation of the physical background of the phenomenon. Modeling techniques, numerical models and simulations. Methods of reinforcement of timber structures. Composite timber-concrete systems.

Lectures, consultations. Through lectures (presentations, simulations, video films), current trends and aspects of research in the field of timber structures are brought closer to students, while through the discussion the individual students' interests will be focused. In terms of individual affinities, a student refers to contemporary literature in the narrower field of research, and throughout consultations his work and progress are interactively supervised. On the basis of the expressed interest, a theme for seminar paper will be assigned to a student, which he performs through study-research work in specialized laboratories. Through the seminar paper, a student should demonstrate the ability of critical analysis, assessment and synthesis of new and complex ideas in the field of timber structures during problem solving. Study-research work is carried out with the mentor supervision.
