ECTS 5

In order to enable correct colour reproduction regardless of the reproduction device used it is indispensable to understand colour management basics. Therefore, the main goal of the course is to introduce students to the principle of colour management and to train them to apply those principles in modern systems in graphic arts industry. It is necessary to elucidate the influence of device and operating system on the appearance of reproduced colour, to explain the methods used to overcome the limits in colour reproduction, to emphasize the importance of the process control and the calibration of the devices by demonstrating the ways to perform calibrations, as well as to introduce students to the relevant standards and the importance of standardization in the respective field.

Upon successful completion of the course students possess the knowledge of the basic principles and elements of colour management system, concepts of quantifying colour information, the methods of colour transformation with the goal of gaining desired reproduction, as well as the procedures that ensures obtaining stable and repeatable colour reproduction regardless of the reproduction device used. In addition, students understand limits and possibilities of colour reproduction on different devices, are trained to implement color management system in graphic arts industry with respect to the current standards and are able to calibrate and profile all the devices used in the reproduction process. The knowledge gained may be used in professional, scientific and research work, as well as in the further specialization.

Theoretical part: The need for colour management in graphic arts, Colour management fundamentals (the concept of ICC colour management, colour management modul, rendering intents, profiles, profile connection space), Basic concept of calibration and profiling of devices (profiling approaches, principles of forming transformation function), Profiles in colour management system (structure, profile types, implementation), Control and use of ICC profiles, Colour management workflows, Display devices colour management (LCD screens), Colour management of projection devices (DLP, Lcos, LCD projectors), Input devices colour management (digital camera, scanner), Output devices colour management (digital and conventional printing and printing systems), Colour management in operating systems, applications and Web, Standardization of the procedures in colour management. Practical part: Gamut mapping and the analysis of the parameters of colour management system on the colour reproduction, Visual calibration of display, Instrumental display calibration, Soft proof (the assessment of the applicability of display for soft proof and the calibration procedure), Scanner calibration and profiling, Digital camera profiling, Projector calibration and profiling, Digital printer calibration and profiling, Printer calibration based on G7 method, Printing press profiling, Analysis, correction and implementation of ICC profiles, Analysis of the documents in color management chain, Generating colour management workflows.

The course is organized in accordance with the modern didactics resources and methods, interactive in the form of lectures and laboratory sessions. In addition, the consultations are held on a regular basis. Lectures cover theoretical parts of the course, where the presentations consist of both static and dynamic (animated and video) content. The laboratory sessions thematically correspond to the lectures and are designed to train students to use measuring devices and color management softwares, analyze reproduction, and perform calibration and profiling of all the devices used in the reproduction processes. Pre-exam requirements consist of successfully completed laboratory sessions (validated via test and completion of specific practical tasks necessary for adequate colour management), as well as the attendance of laboratory sessions and lectures. The exam consists of written and oral part, where the completition of the written part is required prior oral exam.
