Native organizations units: Chair of Graphic Engineering and Design
General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Grafičko inženjerstvo
ECTS 4

The objective of the course is to educate students in the field of graphic packaging and their training in understanding the process of packaging production, the importance and role of packaging and the application of acquired knowledge in the field of graphic packaging design. Through the course students are introduced to the concept of graphic packaging, types, necessary technological systems for their realization, designing, modifying existing ones and creating new packaging solutions, creating prototypes, models and drawings needed for production. The student learns to understand the use of given terms, how to solve the problem in the given area, develop the ability to identify, formulate and find solutions for given problems.

Upon completion of the course, students acquire knowledge necessary for understanding complex processes in the field of graphic packaging and can apply them in the field of packaging design, packaging testing, creating new and modifying existing solutions of graphic packaging. Upon completion of the course, the student is acquainted with the production of packaging, the role of packaging, packaging materials, types of packaging, quality control, packaging printing, designing new ones and modifying existing solutions, creating prototypes, doing technical drawings and forms necessary for its production. The acquired knowledge will be used in future professional work as well as in further education.

Packaging production, importance and role of packaging. Paper and cardboard packaging. Admission of raw materials and semi-finished products for the production of packaging. Packaging design. Preparation and development of the form. Paper packaging. Flexible packaging. Solid packaging. System packaging. Packaging standards. Packaging made of cardboard and corrugated cardboard. Types, design, equipment needed for production process. Quality control of packaging. Other types of packaging: polymer packaging, metal, wooden, glass and textile packaging. Printing of packaging. Practical work is following theoretical classes: graphic packaging design in appropriate software, modification of standard box solutions, drawing of new solutions, creation of a 3D model of structural design of the box, production of prototype, creation of model and drawings of foldable boxes, forming a die-cutting form for foldable boxes.

Teaching is done with modern didactic means and methods, interactive, in the form of lectures and computer and laboratory exercises. The lectures present the theoretical part of the material with simulations and citing examples in order to understand the subject matter more easily. The lecture materials are available to students in .pdf format. Computer classes follow lectures where the software tool for graphic packaging design is used in modification of standard boxes, drawing of new solution boxes, creation of a structural design of the box, making prototypes, making technical drawings of foldable boxes. Laboratory exercises are organized in such a way that on the available laboratory equipment, the acquired theoretical knowledge in the field of quality control and testing of mechanical properties of packaging materials is practically applied. In addition to lectures and exercises, consultations are held regularly.
