The aim of the course, Illustration, is to enable students to solve problems in the field of illustration through theory and practical work. Students will be introduced to the basic elements of the creative process of illustration for different market needs. While engaging with this course, students are encouraged to connect information from different areas such as fashion, history, music, biology, etc., with the topic of illustration. Apart from becoming familiar with the general characteristics of certain styles of illustration and employing these basic techniques based on the needs of the assignment, the ultimate objective of the course is for the students to develop their own unique style based on the concepts learned and their own personal inspiration.
The end goal of the Illustration course is the creation of a portfolio in which students demonstrate the acquired knowledge and skills in the field of illustration. This involves crafting work from a careful selection of various initial sketches, a critical attitude towards one's own work, and finding the appropriate colors or symbols for a particular type of illustration. The acquired knowledge can then be used in the process of designing illustrations, conducting independent work and for the purposes of further training. After the completion of the course, students are able to produce illustrations using traditional and digital methods for the purpose of interpreting, supplementing or decorating certain content while also being able to explain their creative decisions.
The course, Illustration, is divided into both theoretical and practical parts. Lectures within the theoretical part include the following thematic units throughout the semester. Within the practical part of the course, using computer exercises, students will apply the knowledge gained in the lectures and create digital illustrations on the various topics.
Lectures on the topic of Illustration are accompanied by visual presentations that support and exemplify the current teaching unit. Through exercises, students are presented with both traditional illustrative techniques and contemporary trends in the field of digital illustration. Lessons learned in the lectures serve as a basis for further work on the exercises. Problems and opportunities based on these lessons are given to the students in the form of practical tasks that are realized through the exercises. A significant segment of the Illustration course also involves the analysis of the presented works, which develops the ability of self-criticism among students and prepares them for independent work in the future and application of the concepts in practice.
