Subject: Audio Engineering (17.EK470)

General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Telecommunications and Signal Processing
ECTS 5

To present audio signals (speech, music and noise) in more detail, as well as all audio-devices in the chain from recording, processing, to playback. To study digital audio-formats for sound recording, transmission and reproduction, as well as the tools for sound analysis and processing. To learn the principles of designing and installing the sound systems for both indoor and outdoor rooms. Through practical work, introduce audio engineering for recording and reproducing sound, standards and techniques for recording, audio monitoring, analysis, processing and mixing of audio signals.

Students become familiar with electroacoustic transducers (microphones, speakers and headphones), as well as with other devices and equipment, which they encounter when visiting music studios. They learn about digital techniques and formats of audio recording and reproduction of sound, as well as software tools for sound analysis and processing. They learn to measure and analyze sound characteristics, various acoustic parameters of the rooms, as well as to design and instal the sound systems at open and closed spaces. Students also learn how to evaluate the acoustic ambience in terms of speech intelligibility, quality of listening to music, and noise levels, as well as to select and place audio-equipment for recording speech, music and ambient sound.

(1) Audio devices for sound recording and reproduction: microphones, loudspeakers and headphones (types, electro-acoustic properties, principles and modes of operation). (2) Sound studio equipment and audio signal processing: audio mixers (audio-visual control, mixing, filters, regulation of level, dynamics and reverberation, echo, panning, audio monitoring and sound editing, digital audio effects). (3) Recording of speech and music programmes (selection and layout of microphones for recording instrumental ensembles as well as individual instruments), sound for film and video. Stereo and surround systems. Multichannel recording and reproduction of sound (5.1, 7.1,...), MIDI, MPEG, HD and 3D sound. Mix, remix, mastering. (4) Sound systems: design and layout in open and closed spaces (loudspeaker systems, loudspeaker and microphone setups, audio feedback, audio monitoring, stereo listening zones, home theatres).

Lectures are performed with PowerPoint presentations accompanied by numerous audio and video attachments and animations. They are followed by exercises in the Laboratory of Acoustics and Speech Technologies or in a sound studio at FTS. Visits to Radio Novi Sad and Studio Berar are arranged (and students internship by agreement), where students will learn about practical audio engineering, music and speech studios, anechoic rooms and audio-theater complexes, as well as sound systems. The exam prerequisites are a seminar work and 3 of 4 tests - the condition for entering the exam is 25 of 50 points. Seminar works are done individually, while the best from some topics are presented and bring additional points. The first part of the exam can be passed through the colloquium in the middle of the semester. Independent student work is supported through the web portal of the Chair of Communications and Signal Processing - www.telekom.ftn.uns.ac.rs.
