The goal of this course is to understand principles in design and functionality of major wireless technologies of today: mobile cellular systems (such as 4G LTE and 5G) and wireless WLAN networks, from their architecture and services to the fundamental principles and protocols that govern digital data transmission in these systems.
After this course, the student will understand the architecture and fundamentals of modern wireless communication systems such as 4G LTE as well as wireless WLAN networks, focusing on the protocols and details in system design and functionality across all layers. Student will understand how information is transmitted from user terminals to base stations in radio access network and further through the core network of mobile cellular operator. Student will obtain knowledge on WLAN technology and understand the difference between these two competing systems.
1) Introduction to mobile cellular systems - historical developments and generations, 2) LTE technology: network architecture and elements, 3) LTE core network, 4) LTE radio access network, 5) LTE physical layer with detailed understanding of signal processing at user terminal and base station, 6) evolution towards 5G, 7) Fundamentals of WLAN technology, 8) 802.11 Wi-Fi physical layer and difference with LTE PHY, 9) WLAN network architecture and difference to mobile cellular systems. The course will be supported by detailed MATLAB material.
Lessons; auditory sessions and laboratory exercises with MATLAB examples.
