Subject: Introduction to digital communications (17.EK320)

Native organizations units: Department of Power, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering
General information:

Category Professional-applicative
Scientific or art field Telecommunications and Signal Processing
ECTS 7

The main objective of the course is introducing the students to the basic techniques of digital signal transmission. The material covered by the lectures includes modeling of systems for baseband digital signal transmission, description of their main components, theoretical analysis of signals, noise, interference, and other relevant aspects of such systems, as well as the transmitter/receiver design. Computer and lab exercises are intended for practical realization of the acquired knowledge.

After successful completion of the course, students will: 1.) Possess the theoretical knowledge necessary for modeling and analysis of systems for baseband digital signal transmission, 2.) Be able to identify the main components of such systems and describe their functionality, 3.) Be able to implement in software (using Matlab) and simulate the functionality of each of the components, as well as to estimate the performance of the entire system.

Review of the basic notions from probability theory and random processes. Statistical analysis of digital signals. Digital signal processing at the transmitting side – scrambling, linear and nonlinear line coding. Baseband digital signal transmission – impact of noise and inter-symbol interference, probability of error. Nyquist criteria, equalization, optimal receiver. Symbol synchronization.

Lectures, tutorials, computer practice, lab practice, consultations.
