Subject: Digital modulations (17.EK300)

Native organizations units: Department of Power, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering

General information:

Category Scientific-professional
Scientific or art field Telecommunications and Signal Processing
ECTS 6

The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the modern techniques of digital signal transmission. The material builds upon the topics studied in the course Introduction to digital communications (EK320) and is intended to deepen the students’ knowledge in this field by covering advanced transmission techniques and modern multiuser digital communication systems.

After successful completion of the course, students will: 1.) Have a comprehensive overview of the modern techniques for digital signal transmission, 2.) Possess the theoretical knowledge necessary for modeling and analysis of systems for digital signal transmission, as well as for calculating their performance parameters, 3.) Be able to implement in software (using Matlab) and test the performance of digital communication systems.

The signal space – geometric characterization of signals, noise, and the demodulation process. Optimal receiver of digital signals – matched filter, optimality in AWGN channels, correlation receiver. Amplitude shift keying. Phase shift keying. Amplitude phase keying. Frequency shift keying. Performance comparison of basic modulation techniques – probability of error, spectral efficiency. OFDM. Spread spectrum techniques – direct sequence, frequency hopping. Multiple-antenna systems – MIMO channels. Multiuser communications – multiple access techniques, CDMA.
