Educational goal:

Introducing more complex terms in English in the field of environmental engineering, grammar revision for ESP needs, improving oral and written communication skills in English, reading and translating professional authentic articles in English.

Educational outcome:

Students will improve their knowledge of the most important grammatical and lexical structures which can be found within the discourse of environmental engineering. In other words, they will learn more complex lexical phrases of this area, express themselves more properly – orally and in writing – and be able to use the professional literature in English.

Course content:

When reading and analyzing authentic texts of environmental engineering, students are expected to master complex terminology, associated with a variety of topics in this area: Calamities and Catastrophies, Global Environmental Events, Air Pollution Management System, Water Management System, 6.Waste Management, Legal and Ethical Issues. Exercises that accompany the text are used for checking on students' understanding, developing and expanding the vocabulary and defining the relevant grammatical structures. Special attention is given to practicing suffixes and prefixes (word formation), using of infinitives and gerunds, relative clauses, conjunctions, modal verbs, etc. which are usually found in the language of technical and professional communication. In addition, repetition of the uses of basic tenses, passive structures and conditional sentences is planned.

Teaching methods:

Teaching ESP 2 for Environmental Engineering is based on the fundamental principles of interactive teaching method, as well as methods to encourage students to become independent learners. a) Teaching methods: interactive methods in accordance with the communicative approach , PBL method with the aim of transferring activities from teacher to student. b) Forms of work : lectures , consultations. c) Aspects of work : team / doubles / individual. d) Teaching techniques : classification, categorization, systematization of knowledge and information.
