Acquiring of knowledge about lightning-induced power system transients. Acquiring of knowledge about switching transients, temporary overvoltages and overvoltage protection. Acquiring of knowledge about transients related to shunt capacitor banks, induction and synchronous motors, transformers and synchronous generators.
Knowledge about basic concepts of power system transients. The ability of students to analyze transient overvoltages and select appropriate overvoltage protection. Knowledge about transients related to basic power system elements.
Switching transients in power systems: basic theory and simple examples. Temporary overvoltages: classification, overvoltages due to faults, switching overvoltages, overvoltage due to resonance and ferroresonance, overvoltages due to load rejection, Ferranti effect. Lightning-induced transients: the mechanism of lightning, the impact of lightning strokes, shielding and lightning protection. Surge Arresters: basic theory, types, response to switching and lightning surges. Transients related to shunt capacitor banks. Transients related to induction and synchronous motors. Transients related to transformers. Transients related to synchronous generators. Numerical simulation of transients in power systems.
