Educational goal:

Introducing students to programmable logical controllers (PLC) and their main application in the power engineering. Introducing students to local control with PLC applied in the industry. Introducing students to distributed control with PLC and information technology and methods of application of those technologies in the modern industry and modern power engineering.

Educational outcome:

1) Good knowledge of elementary microcomputer operation and operation of industrial devices and microcomputer based systems, 2) Excellent knowledge of the most commonly used industrial communication protocols, 3) as well as introduction to the basic principles for connecting devices to Internet.

Course content:

1. Programmable Logic Controllers – PLC (principle of operation I/O, expansion for support of modern information technologies) 2- Local control with PLC. 2.1 Application of PLC in control of power drives, 2.2 power schematics, 2.3 protection equipment 3. Distributed control with PLC 3.1. Industrial communication protocols of lower order (asynchronous data: RS-232 and RS-458) 3.2 Industrial communication protocols of higher order (MODBUS, PROFIBUS, Industrial Ethernet). 3.3 Networking of computers, PLC controllers and other equipment (communication with sensors and actuators – e.g. Multimeter Siemens SIMEAS Q, SCADA system for monitoring and acquisition of measured values) 4. Basic principles of Internet connection (LAN and Ethernet applications, Basic Internet Protocol TCP/IP)
