ECTS 5

The objective of the course is to offer students fundamental knowledge in the operation principles and the exploitation of the renewable power sources, before all wind power, sunshine and water (small hydropower plants). The goal is to make students familiar with the operation, design and techno-economic aspect of their use, especially taking into consideration the available capacities in Vojvodina and Serbia. Besides, the students will be acquainted with the inclusion of these sources into the existing distribution system, as well as with all the challenges and advantages of the approach.

Students will be able to study, utilize and design different types of renewable power sources, and to advance the possibilities of their use. They will acquire practical experience in working with wind and solar power plants, as well as with the possibilities for their inclusion into the existing power distribution system.

Introduction – overview of renewable power sources. Energetic potential and geographic position. Current state in Serbia and Vojvodina. Exploitation possibilities and possibilities of conversion. Conversion of solar and wind energy into power – theory, models and operating principles. Characteristics and selection of power generators by wind generators. Energy power converters application – wind generators, solar power. Manufacturing and assembly. Complex power stations (wind farms) – operating principles, downtime, management, PES implementation. Small hydroelectric power plants – construction, control and startup. Economic and commercial conditions for successful application of renewable power resources for production and distribution of electric power. Possibilities for implementation of renewable power sources into electro energetic grid. Advantages and disadvantages of distributed management (unstable electro energetic grid, island operation, quality of electric power, etc.

Theoretical aspects and mathematical models will be discussed in lectures. Problem solving and design methods will be done in auditory practice classes, whereas practice work and measurement features will be practiced in the laboratory practice classes. Students? independent work will be evaluated through their project work.
