Educational goal:

The aim of the course is to provide a fundamental knowledge of electrical motor drives, their interaction with power electronic converters and mechanical loads, and to provide various aspects of control techniques of electrical motor drives for commercial and industrial applications, including automotive-application drives such as in electrical vehicles.

Educational outcome:

After having followed the course, students will be able to understand working and control principles of electrical motor drives, their sub systems, and to choose a suitable control structure and calculate control parameters for an electrical motor drive.

Course content:

Introduction. Basic elements of an electrical motor drive: power converter, rotating electrical machine, mechanical load, and a transmission drive. Static and dynamic conditions of a motor drive system. Various types of a mechanical load. Steady state stability of an electrical motor drive. DC motor drives. Open-loop control of separately excited DC motor: starting, electrical braking, transient analysis. Power electronic converters for DC electric motor drives. AC motor drives. Induction motor drives. Open-loop control of induction motors: soft starting techniques, variable-speed operation, scalar control technique, various methods of electrical braking, transient analysis. Field-oriented control of the induction motor. Performance characteristics of synchronous motor drives. Field-oriented control of the synchronous motor. Power electronic converters for AC electric motor drives. Thermal analysis of electric motors. Selection of power rating of an electric motor for an industrial system.
