ECTS 6

Learning basic concepts of cognitive radio that adjust its work to an existing situation in the environment. Acquiring basic knowledge about the necessary elements of cognitive radio: dynamic spectrum usage, spectrum sensing and software defined radio.

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to: explain the concept and architecture of cognitive radio; identify existing systems and available technology; use SDR platform for tranciever deployment; compose cognitive tranciever with basic functionality; choose suitable algorithms for realisation of individual building blocks.

Basic concepts of cognitive radio. Software Defined Radio as a Platform for Cognitive Radio. Propagation issues for cognitive radio. Spectrum sensing, exploration and exploitation. Cognitive Radio Architecture. Coexistence and Interference Mitigation Techniques. Capacity of cognitive radio networks. Fundamentals of Ranging and Localization for Cognitive Radio.

Lectures, computer and lab exercises. Individual work (research and projects) and active learning.
