Educational goal:

Expanding and acquiring new knowledge in the field of materials science and engineering materials, and their selection and application.

Educational outcome:

New and expanded knowledge about types of engineering materials, and the relationship between properties and application, as well as solving the selection of materials for specific products.

Course content:

Advance trends in development and application of: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Metals and alloys: Characterization and properties of alloys based on iron, copper, aluminum and titanium. Ceramics: bonding, crystalline and amorphous microstructure, equilibrium and reactions, mechanical, electrical, thermal, magnetic and optical properties. Polymers: molecular structures, polymerization, methods of characterization, morphology, mechanical properties and glass transition temperature. Composites: particulate, fiber reinforced and laminated composite materials; composites with a polymeric, metal, ceramic and carbon base. Biomaterials and nanomaterials. Material selection criteria. Material selection charts. Selection of materials according to mechanical properties: static strength, stiffness, fatigue, creep, corrosion resistance and wear. Relations between material selection and design process. Materials, aesthetics and industrial design. Case studies of materials selection in: automotive and aviation industry, machine building, shipbuilding.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, study research work and consultations. The lectures provide a theoretical part of the material using modern equipment and information and communication technologies. Through lectures, a student acquires and mastered contemporary scientific knowledge, scientific methods and procedures that enable him to become independent research work. In addition to lectures, consultations are also held regularly. Study research work includes all forms of teaching that are in the function of directly training a student for research, writing scientific papers and making a doctoral dissertation. Study research work includes active monitoring of primary scientific sources, organization and execution of numerical simulations and experimental research.
