Preparation for research work in the fields of power electronics and microelectronics.

Knowledge of the design principle of the power semiconductor switches. The ability to select solid-state components, as well as appropriate protection and control elements. Knowledge of methods for the estimation of reliability and the state diagnostics of the power semiconductors. Analysis in the fields of application of power semiconductor switches.

Basic operating principles of the power semiconductor switches. Areas of application and performance. Basic operating principles of the modern power semiconductor switches: diodes, thyristors, bipolar transistors, MOSFET, IGBT. Power diodes and thyristors: static and dynamic electrical characteristics; thermal characteristics; regular and parallel connection; driver circuits for thyristors; protection and the fault detection. MOSFET and IGBT power transistors: switching characteristics; safe operating areas; natural and forced cooling; parallel switching; protection of power semiconductor switches at high operating frequencies. Applications of power semiconductor switches. Packaging of the semiconductor switches: discrete components and modules. Accessories: drivers, protection circuits and sensors. Electromagnetic compatibility of power semiconductor switches and low power electronic components. Reliability. Impact of exploitation conditions. Test instruments for the power semiconductors. Computer models of semiconductor power switches. Software tools for dimensioning and selection of power semiconductor switches.

Part of teaching is realized through independent research work in the fields of power electronics and microelectronics, primarily through the analysis of operation of semiconductor switches in the power converters with different topologies. Study research work includes active study of a scientific literature, organization and performance of experiments, data analysis, as well as a paper writing from a scientific field which belongs to a topic of a doctoral dissertation.
